I wanted to portray a strong sense of discovery. I did this by making the image a cold, dark blue, and highlighting the explorers with a strong, contrasting red flare. This I found added a powerful sense of delving into the unknown and unexplored.
My interior is a section from inside the vessel, at a separate time of day, say mid morning. Inside the ship we find a cryo pod, possibly still active, as there is a pretty ok looking human inside.
I wanted the image to look sickly and near gruesome while still keeping the aura of nature and foliage. A strong green with yellowy highlights and a little saturation over the cryo pod made the scene look alien but still familiar, and portray a gross, inhuman environment.
I think the interior turned out better than the exterior. The foliage and colors are near exactly what I wanted, whereas in the exterior image I couldn't get the water looking quite right, nor the canopy, no matter how many tweaks I put in it. If I had another day I think I would do a good deal of research into treetops from high angles and more light reflecting off water studies. The wreckage of the ship, however, turned out rather nice, with the blue white of the moon on one surface and the yellow red of the flare on the opposite angle. It made for a nice focal point.
